Can you survive on Minimum Wage (or Not?)
Minimum Wage, can you survive?
Today the lowest-paid workers of the country will get raises as the federal minimum wage increases 12 percent, or 70 cents, from $5.85 to $6.55 an hour. But many of the members of the working class, including many who already earn more then the minimum wage, say that’s still not enough to pay the bills!
57-year-old Barbara Stepney makes $7.15 an hour working in the laundry of a Comfort Inn. She says she can’t afford her own apartment, a car or health insurance.
How is the Economy Treating You?
About 60 percent of minimum-wage workers labor in leisure and hospitality jobs, such as food preparation, and tend to be younger and unmarried, according to the BLS.
The numbers just don’t add up for millions of Americans making close to minimum wage, say fair-wage advocates, especially in light of increases in gas and food prices.
